Sustainability

What does it look like at St Hild’s?

At St Hild’s, sustainability is embedded in everyday actions and learning experiences. Our school community takes small but meaningful steps to reduce environmental impact, from using washable plates and increasing fruit and vegetable options at lunchtime to providing a vegetarian meal choice. Refillable water stations encourage the reduction of single-use plastics. Where safe, we prioritise the use of local transport reinforcing our commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Through these efforts, pupils are encouraged to consider the impact of their choices on both their local and global communities.

How is it developed Y7-Y11?

Sustainability is explicitly taught across the curriculum and integrated into school life.

  • In Key Stage 3 Geography, it is an assessed and tracked component, ensuring pupils develop a strong understanding of environmental issues.
  • It is also embedded in Science, where pupils explore the impact of human activity on the planet.

Beyond the classroom, sustainability is a focus in a range of practical activities, such as recycling materials and repurposing waste for Creative Industries projects.

Pupils’ understanding of sustainability develops throughout their time at St Hilds. In Key Stage 3, Geography and Science lessons provide a foundation in environmental issues, which is reinforced through hands-on experiences like orienteering with the PE department and the NEAT Experience. At Key Stage 4, sustainability remains a focus in Science and is further explored through practical applications in subjects such as the Creative Industries.

We ensure that all pupils can engage with sustainability in a meaningful way, regardless of their needs. Practical, hands-on activities such as orienteering, cycling, and map-based navigation provide accessible ways for pupils to connect with their local environment.

Careers education with a focus on the local area and renewable industries helps all pupils see sustainability as relevant to their future pathways. By making sustainability a lived experience rather than just a concept, we create inclusive opportunities for all pupils to engage with environmental responsibility.

Parent (carer)/pupil/staff voice:

Pupils play a key role in shaping sustainability at St Hild’s, contributing ideas, taking part in initiatives, and supporting school-wide efforts to be more environmentally responsible.

Staff integrate sustainability into teaching and extracurricular activities, ensuring that it is not only explicitly taught but also embedded in practical experiences.

By working together, our school community continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, creating a lasting impact both locally and beyond.
