BAE Systems, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Air Force visit St Hilds

Oct 24, 2023

On Thursday, we had a special visit and demonstration from BAE Systems, the Navy, and the Royal Air Force.

Professionals from the engineering company, based nearby in Washington, visited the school alongside members of the Royal Air Force to give a fascinating talk to our entire year 7 and year 8 classes.

In the show, From the bottom of the ocean to outer space, pupils were able to get involved with activities such as dressing up in uniforms, using megaphones, and undertaking a timed challenge to put the planets in the solar system in the right order.

The roadshow was really informative with pupils learning about topics such as:

  • Submarines, aircraft carriers, and the kind of planes used by the Royal Navy.
  • The water on earth, the percentage of ice, and what happens if it melts.
  • STEM careers at BAE System, the RAF, and the Royal Navy.

The show was capped off with an amazing demonstration of the size difference between our planet and a star, a five metre inflatable and a tiny marble!

Y7 and Y8 had a really great time, saying:

“It was really fun, especially the massive sun. I learned about the different layers of the atmosphere.”

“The roadshow was interactive, funny and large like the blow up sun.”

“It was really cool. I enjoyed them going on a journey from the bottom of the sea to outer space. I learned about the different atmospheres and about stars and planets.”

“I really liked it when they got volunteers up.”

A teacher said:

“The roadshow was great. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed it and there was a good mix of fun and STEM educational material.  The hands-on/interactive parts really helped with the learning of facts. And of course, the giant sun and tiny marble were an amazing finale.”

This is the third time the roadshow has visited our school and we’d like to thank them again for putting on an amazing and informative show!
